Background

Smad5 (Smad; an amalgam of the Sma gene in worm and the MAD gene in fruitfly) is a transcriptional modulator that is activated by BMP receptor kinases. Human Smad5 shares 99% amino acid sequence homology with the mouse or rat protein.
