Notes

Antisera to human follistatin were raised by repeated immunisations of rabbits with highly purified antigen. Purified IgG was prepared from whole serum by affinity chromatography.

Background

Follistatin is specific for human follistatin (FST), a single-chain glycosylated secreted protein of gonadal origin, originally identified as an antagonist of activin and suppressor of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) synthesis/secretion. As well as activin, FST interacts with and inhibits other members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) superfamily, such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) -2, -4 and -7, myostatin and growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF-9), making FST a key regulator in development and regeneration processes.
