Background

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known as a major growth factor for endothelial cells. KDR is one of the two receptors of VEGF, known as kinase insert domain receptor. This receptor, which is a type III receptor tyrosine kinase, acts as the main mediator of VEGF-induced endothelial proliferation, survival, migration, tubular morphogenesis and sprouting. Multiple factors control the signaling and trafficking of this receptor, namely Rab GTPase, P2Y purine nucleotide receptor, integrin alphaVbeta3, and T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase. KDR mutations are implicated in conditions such as infantile capillary hemangiomas.
