Background

Cell adhesion molecule CD146 (MUC18) is an integral membrane glycoprotein of 113 kDa whose expression on primary human melanomas correlates with poor prognosis and the development of metastatic disease. CD146 is expressed only sporadically in benign melanomas that have a low probability of metastasizing. However, with increasing tumor thickness, CD146 expression becomes more frequent and it is found on a large proportion of advanced primary tumors and metastases. CD146 is therefore a useful marker for the differential diagnosis of lesions, including melanomas and various types of gestational trophoblastic lesions.
