Background
NSE (neuron-specific enolase or enolase 2) is an enzyme which facilitates the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolytic pathway, and also the reverse reaction in gluconeogenic metabolism. It belongs to mammalian enolases ENO1, ENO2, and ENO3 (alternately known as enolase alpha, beta and gamma respectively) and these three enolases have different cell type specific expression patterns. NSE is found in relatively large amounts in neurons, PNS tissues and neuroendocrine cells, and is one of the most commonly employed biochemical markers of nervous tissue damage. Increased NSE levels in serum, CSF, or both have been reported in several neurological pathologies such as status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, acute ischemic stroke, head injury and hypoxic brain injury and Tuberculous Meningitis.
