BRCA2-5F6 recognizes the BRCA2 gene product, a 390kDa nuclear protein. The BRCA2 gene was originally isolated based on its importance in the predisposition of women to early-onset breast and ovarian cancers, suggesting mutations affect its tumor suppressor-like activity. Targeted disruption of the BRCA2 gene in mice and binding of Rad51 to its carboxyl terminus have indicated an involvement in DNA recombination and double strand break repair.
