Background
Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) is a 378
amino acid enzyme which cleaves the zymogen plasminogen to form the active enzyme
plasmin. uPa occurs in high and low molecular mass forms each consisting of two
chains (A and B). The high mass form has
a long A chain while the low mass form has a short chain AuPA is widely
expressed in normal tissues including epithelia, muscle, reproductive organs
and brain, and is highly expressed in
kidney, where it localizes to proximal and distal tubules and is secreted into
urine. uPA is known to play a role in wound healing and tissue remodeling and tumor invasion
