Background

Sialoadhesin, also known as sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectin 1, siglec-1, CD169, SIGLEC1, and SN, is a member of the sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin (SIGLEC) family. The SIGLECs are a family of membrane bound lectins that belong to the immunoglobulin superfamily. SIGLECs bind sialic acid and mediate cell to cell interactions. Family members include sialoadhesin, CD22 and CD33. Sialoadhesin is a lectin-like macrophage-specific cell adhesion molecule that mediates sialic acid dependent binding of glycoconjugate ligands on activated macrophages, lymphocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, natural killer cells, B-cells and CD8 T-cells. The Sialoadhesin protein is found in two locations within the cell, the cell membrane (isoform 1) and secreted in the cytoplasm (isoform 2). Sialoadhesin is expressed in spleen, lymph node, brain, bone marrow, liver, colon and lung tissues and in inflammatory macrophages in rheumatoid arthritis.
