Tenascin C is an extracellular matrix protein that is expressed in various tissues during development, disease or injury. Tenascin C inhibits HIV infection in immune cells by binding to a chemokine coreceptor site on the HIV-1 envelope protein, thereby blocking the virus' entry into the host cells. Tenascin C expression in the stroma of certain tumors is often associated with a poor prognosis.
