Background

Mouse Melanocortin 3R (MC3R) is a member of the melanocortin receptor family. The 323 amino acid G-protein-coupled 7-transmembrane glycoprotein is expressed in the brain where, along with MC4R, it binds alpha , beta and gamma melanocyte stimulating hormones and is involved in regulating energy balance. MC3R is also expressed by macrophages and plays an anti-inflammatory role in the heart and other tissues. Of the 69 aa that are extracellular, mouse MC3R shares 91% and 78% sequence identity with rat and human MC3R, respectively.
