Background
Interleukin-6 Receptor (IL-6 R) is a transmembrane receptor for the multifunctional cytokine IL-6 which plays a major role in the mediation of inflammatory and immune responses. IL-6 R binds to IL-6 with high affinity and associates with gp130/CD130 to form the signaling receptor complex. IL-6 R is primarily expressed on hepatocytes and leukocytes, while gp130 is ubiquitously expressed. gp130 also functions as a component of the receptor complexes for Cardiotrophin-1, CLC, CNTF, G-CSF, IL-11, IL-31, Leptin, LIF, Neuropoietin, and Oncostatin M. Complexes of IL-6 with naturally occurring soluble IL-6 R can bind cell surface gp130 and induce trans signaling.
