Background
Intelectin-1, also known as Omentin, HL-1, and Lactoferrin Receptor, is a GPI-linked protein that is expressed by vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells, particularly in the heart, small intestine, colon, thymus, ovary, testis, and omental fat as well as by intestinal Paneth cells and airway and intestinal goblet cells. Intelectin-1 limits multiple aspects of cardiovascular pathology following ischemic injury. In addition, it inhibits osteoblast bone matrix mineralization, enhances insulin-stimulated uptake by adipocytes, supports neural stem cell viability, and inhibits the invasion and metastasis of neuroblastoma cells. Intelectin-1 binds to microbial galactofuranosyl carbohydrates and functions as a receptor for the iron-transporting protein Lactoferrin.
