Background

The G-protein-coupled receptor 119 is important in type II diabetes. It is expressed primarily in the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. When GPR119 is activated in gut cells, it leads to insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. This insulin secretion is glucose-dependent and leads to the release of GLP1, GIP, and PYY, which are known to help regulate the diabetic response to dietary effects. GPR119 also is important in gut inflammation pathways.
