Background

Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF-15) is a divergent member of the TGF-beta superfamily. Biologically active GDF-15 is a disulfide-linked homodimer of the mature protein. Human GDF-15 shares 67% aa sequence identity with rat and mouse GDF-15. GDF-15 is expressed in placenta, brain, kidney, pancreas, prostate, and colon. It inhibits macrophage and platelet activation, regulates angiogenesis, and promotes recovery following myocardial infarction. GDF-15 also promotes cartilage formation, neuronal survival, and appetite suppression.
