Background
c-ABL regulates cytoskeleton remodeling during cell differentiation, cell division and cell adhesion. It localizes to dynamic actin structures, and phosphorylates CRK and CRKL, DOK1, and other proteins controlling cytoskeleton dynamics. Activity of the c-Abl protein is negatively regulated by its SH3 domain, and deletion of the SH3 domain turns ABL1 into an oncogene. c-ABL also potentially regulates DNA repair by activating the proapoptotic pathway when the DNA damage is too severe to be repaired.
