Background

Amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) is associated with neuronal injury and death in Alzheimer's disease. The most common isoforms are of Amyloid beta are Abeta40 and Abeta42.

The Amyloid beta proteins function as a cell surface receptor and supports neurite growth, neuronal adhesion and axonogenesis on the surface of neurons. Amyloid betas are also involved in cell mobility functions and transcription regulation via various protein-protein interactions.

Mutations in Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) that are associated with early-onset Alzheimer's have been shown to specifically increase the relative production of the Abeta42 isoform. Abeta 42 is also more fibrillogenic and plays a bigger role in deneurogeneration. It is therefore more strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease than Abeta 40.

Abeta42 antibodies are useful tools for Alzheimer's studies and research on amyloid plaques.
