Background
Peptidoglycan recognition protein intermediate beta (PGRP-I beta ), also known as peptidoglycan recognition protein 4 (PGLRP4), belongs to the family of human recognition molecules that bind peptidoglycan (a ubiquitous component of bacterial cell walls) and gram-positive bacteria as part of the innate immune response. It has N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase activity and is primarily expressed in the esophagus, where it is thought to play a role in host antimicrobial defense. PGRP-I beta has two predicted transmembrane domains and extracellular N- and C-termini. The amino acid sequence of human PGRP- I beta is 99% and 76% identical to that of chimpanzee and mouse.
