Background

Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC-6, HD6, and JM21) is a class II histone deacetylase/AcuC/AphA family member. HDAC-6 primarily functions to alter chromosome structure, regulate transcription factor access to DNA, and deacetylate the lysine residues on the N-terminal region of histones. The deacetylase activity, in turn, has a role in the degradation of misfolded proteins by autophagy (PMID: 21235576). The HDAC-6 protein contains two catalytic domains that function independently of each other and plays an important role in cell motility (microtubule dependent) by the deacetylation of tubulin. Research involving HDAC-6 includes cancer development and progression, Parkinson's disease, and epigenetics (PMID: 21455583, 21235576).
