Background
Cryptic, also known as CFC-1 is a member of the Epidermal Growth Factor-Cripto/FRL-1/Cryptic (EGF-CFC) family of signaling proteins. It is expressed during mesoderm differentation and is necessary for determining left-right asymmetry. Cryptic functions as a co-receptor that regulates signaling by some TGF-beta superfamily members.
