Background

In biochemical transmission of neurotransmitters, choline uptake from the synaptic cleft is essential and thought to be the rate-limiting step in acetylcholine synthesis. The high-affinity choline transporter (hCht) mediates Na+ and Cl- dependent choline uptake with high sensitivity to hemicholinium-3 and is specifically expressed in cholinergic neurons.
