Background

Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) create proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, thus uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. As a result, energy is dissipated in the form of heat. They also reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells. Tissue specificity occurs for the different UCPs and the exact methods of how UCPs transfer H+/OH- are not known. They may play a role in thermoregulatory heat production and metabolism in brain. They are found in adult and fetal brain and are present in most of the brain tissues, with low levels in spinal chord, corpus callosum and substantia nigra. They are specifically modulated by various environmental conditions.
