Background

Sca-1 / Ly-6A/E (stem cell antigen-1) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane protein known for its role in T-cell activation, and it can be used as a marker for regeneration-competent myoblasts (1). It is a parenchymal stem cell marker that is used extensively to enrich murine hematopoietic stem cells (2). Moreover, studies have implicated Sca-1 / Ly-6A/E and related family members in cell-cell adhesion among thymocytes (1). Sca-1 / Ly-6A/E has also been reported as a marker for muscle-derived stem cells, and Sca-1 / Ly-6A/E-positive myogenic precursor cells appear to be recruited from the circulation to sites of myocardial injury (1).
