Immunoprecipitation (IP) is a common research technique used to precipitate a specific protein (or protein complex) of interest out of a heterogeneous lysate. The concept of precipitating proteins out of solution is often called a "pull-down". There are a variety of methods to achieve immunoprecipitation, the most common of which uses antibodies bound to magnetic or agarose beads. This process can be used to isolate and concentrate a particular protein or complex from a sample containing many thousands of different proteins, and is often used to study protein-protein interactions through Co-IP experiments.
