Background

TRPM8, or Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8, is a receptor-activated non-selective cation channel involved in the detection of sensations such as coolness, by being activated by cold temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius. It is activated by icilin, eucalyptol, menthol, cold and modulation of intracellular pH. Activated upon depolarization, changes in temperature result in graded shifts of voltage-dependent activation curves for TRPM8. The chemical agonists menthol functions as a gating modifier, shifting activation curves towards physiological membrane potentials. TRPM8 is expressed in the prostate, and it is also expressed in most prostate tumors (1).
