Background

S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent methyltransferase which specifically dimethylates mitochondrial 12S rRNA atthe conserved stem loop. Also required for basal transcription of mitochondrial DNA, probably via its interaction withPOLRMT and TFAM. Stimulates transcription independently of the methyltransferase activity.
