Background

The transcription repressor EHMT1 is a histone methyltransferase that might be important in the G0/G1 cell cycle transition. In children affected with Kleefstra Syndrome, EHMT1 is mutated and seems to mis-regulate normal cellular transitions, and cause hypotonia and intellectual disability. It has been implicated in epigenetic modifications related to learning and memory formation or impairment. Finally, the translocation of this gene and erroneous protein expression have been correlated to mental retardation.
