Background

Rhomboids are a family of intramembrane proteases with a serine protease-like catalytic apparatus embedded within the membrane bilayer, buried in a hydrophilic cavity formed by a protein ring. RHBDL1 (Rhomboid-like 1) may be involved in regulated intramembrane proteolysis and the subsequent release of functional polypeptides from their membrane anchors.
