Immunohistochemistry: FTO Antibody [23660002] - A majority of the normal cells displayed moderate to strong cytoplasmic positivity. For example skeletal muscle cells and glandular cells of the gastrointestinal tract showed strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity. Most of the malignant cells exhibited moderate cytoplasmic positivity. Strongly stained cases were mainly observed among colo-rectal, stomach, endometrial and pancreatic cancers. Malignant lymphomas and renal cancers were in several cases weakly stained or negative. Background

FTO is a novel protein and a member of the non-heme dioxygenase (Fe(II) and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases) superfamily. Amino acid conservation patterns support this hypothesis and indicate that both 2-oxoglutarate and iron should be important for FTO function. Though not much is yet known about FTO, it is thought that the protein may somehow modify the activity of genes involved in metabolism and fat storage, which in turn may influence a person's risk of obesity.
