CAIX belongs to the zinc metalloenzyme carbonic anhydrase family which is involved in several biological functions such as breathing, saliva and calcification. In hypoxic conditions CAIX is induced by HIF-1 alpha, due to its stable conditions and location in the membrane which result in the protein expressed in the hypoxic cells. CAIX is important for cell adhesion, invasion and cellular pH regulation which promote cell growth in tumors. CAIX antibodies are useful diagnostic markers in cancer and tumor research, particularly renal cell, breast, cervical and non-small cell lung carcinoma.
