Background

Reticulon-1 (RTN1-A/RTN1) is a 135 kDa multi-pass membrane protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum of neurons. RTN1-A belongs to no known family of proteins. Rat RTN1-A is 777 amino acids (aa) in length and contains two transmembrane segments and a Reticulon domain (aa 592-759). There are also multiple potential sites for phosphorylation. Alternative splicing produces a second isoform known as RTN1-S, which is missing residues corresponding to aa 1-569 in RTN1-A, and has a 20 aa substitution for residues corresponding to aa 570-589. Rat RTN1-A is 82% aa identical to human RTN1-A
