Background

Rhodopsin is the first member identified in the Opsin subfamily of GPCRs. Rhodopsin mediates dim-light vision by maximally absorbing light at 495 nm. Mutations in rhodopsin cause retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited disease that initially causes night blindness and loss of the mid-peripheral visual field, and eventually leads to a total loss of vision. Rhodopsin expression has been reported in the rod-shaped photoreceptor cells of the retina.
