Background

Principal Names: Caspase 6, apoptosis-related cysteine peptidase Official Gene Symbol: CASP6 Gene ID: 839 (Human) Gene Map Locus: 4q25 (Human). The execution phase of apoptosis requires the activation of a family of highly specific proteases called cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspases). Fourteen caspases have been identified in mammals; those implicated in apoptosis have been divided into two distinct subfamilies. The initiator caspase subfamily members transduce various signals into protease activity, thereby initiating a caspase cascade that proceeds through activation of the downstream effector or executioner caspases. Caspase 6 is processed by caspases 7, 8 and 10, and is thought to function as a downstream enzyme in the caspase activation cascade. It is involved in the activation cascade of caspases responsible for apoptosis execution and its overexpression promotes programmed cell death. It is mapped to 4q25 region of human chromosome. Alternative splicing of this gene results in two transcript variants that encode different isoforms.
