Background

Principal Names: Endothelial cell growth factor 1 (platelet-derived) Official Gene Symbol: ECGF1 Gene ID: 1890 (Human) Gene Map Locus: 22q13; 22q13.33 (Human) Platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor/thymidine phosphorylase (PD-ECGF/TP) is an enzyme with a relative molecular mass of about 45,000 and angiogenic and cell motility properties. Moreover, it is involved in the transformation of fluoropyrimidines into active cytotoxic metabolites. It has a highly restricted target cell specificity acting only on endothelial cells, promoting its activity in vitro and chemotactic activity in vitro. The gene contains 10 exons spanning more than 4.3 kb. Mutations in the gene cause mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE).
