Receptor protein tyrosine kinases (RPTKs) are a class of transmembrane signaling molecules. They have been shown to regulate signaling cascades that control synaptic function in the central nervous system (CNS). Tyro3 is one of three RPTKs belonging to the Axl/UFO subfamily, that also includes Axl and Mer. Tyro3 is the most commonly expressed of these receptors in the CNS. It may be involved in the cell adhesion process, and is commonly found in adult tissues with expression mostly in brain, testis, vascular and lymphatic tissue.
