Description
Macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha) belongs to the intercrine beta (chemokine CC) family (1). MIP-1 alpha is involved in the acute inflammatory state, in the recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and can inhibit infection of cells with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) (2). MIP-1 alpha also acts as a potent growth, survival, and chemotactic factor in multiple melanoma cells. Two know isoforms of MIP-1 alpha can be found; LD78 alpha and LD78 beta (3). Depending on the isoform or its N-terminal processing, one or more of the CC chemokine receptors CCR1, CCR2, CCR3 and CCR5 can recognize MIP alpha, thus inhibiting HIV infection (4).
