Mucosal immunology is to study a part of the immune system which protects an organism's various mucous membranes from invasion by potentially pathogenic microbes. It protects the mucus membrane against infection, prevents the uptake of antigens, microorganisms, and other foreign materials, and moderates the organism's immune response to that material.
