Bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP1) is a 986 amino acid member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family. It was initially discovered for its role to induce cartilage and bone formation. It is a metalloprotease that cleaves the C-terminus of procollagen I, II and III while other BMPs are part of the TGF beta superfamily. It may play a role in herniation, congestive heart failure, breast cancer, myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia and infection by HIV-1.
