Background
Polyoma Viruses are a class of potentially oncogenic DNA viruses that often persist as latent infections in a host without causing disease, but may produce tumors in a host of a different species. Of particular interest, is that only the rodent Polyoma Viruses code for the production of PyMT (Medium T Antigen). This oncogenic protein of the Polyoma Virus is associated with cell membranes and interacts with a variety of cellular proteins involved in mitogenic signaling, such as tyrosine kinases c-Src, c-Yes, and Fyn. Medium T Antigen may therefore mimic the function of cellular tyrosine kinase growth factor receptors, like the platelet-derived growth factor or epidermal growth factor receptor (PMCID: PMC191984). Furthermore, it has been found that the Medium T Antigen may have a mechanism for inactivating p53, as it seems to be a characteristic of oncogenic DNA viruses (PMID: 22261839).
