Description
Penicillinase is a beta-lactamase, showing specificity for penicillins by hydrolysing the beta-lactam ring. Beta lactamases play a significant role in the high resistance of certain organinsms to penicillins, cephalosporins, cephamycins and carbapenems. These antibiotics have a common element in their molecular structure: a four-atom ring known as a beta-lactam. The lactamase enzyme breaks that ring open, deactivating the molecule's antibacterial properties. Penicillinase resistant ß lactams have been developed, such as methicillin, although there is widespread resistance to these now also (MRSA). This antibody is useful for antibody based assays using streptavidin or avidin conjugates requiring lot-to-lot consistency.
