ITM2C also known as Integral membrane protein 2C, has 3 isoforms, an isoform 1that is 267 amino acid and 30 kDa, an isoform 2 that is 220 amino acid and 25 kDa, and an isoform 3 that is 230 amino acid and 26 kDa; most commonly found in the brain tissue; acts as negative regulator of beta amyloid peptide production, may inhibit the processing of APP by blocking its access to alpha- and beta-secretase, appears to be a poor gamma-secretase cleavage inhibitor, and may play a role in TNF-induced cell death and neuronal differentiation. Studies are being performed on the relationship of this protein to anemia of prematurity, cerebritis, anemia, dementia, influenza, gastric cancer, and neuronitis. The protein has been shown to interact with BACE1, APP, STMN2, STT3A, RNF7, and FURIN proteins in negative regulation of neuron projection development, induction of programmed cell death, and neuron differentiation pathways.
