HPV16 L1 Products

Description

HPV16 L1, also known as HPV-16, Major capsid protein L1, and Major Capsid Protein is a papillomavirus. Papillomaviruses are small nonenveloped tumorigenic DNA viruses that infect the basal cells of the epithelium. Papillomavirions contain two proteins, L1 and L2, which encapsulate a closed, circular, double-stranded DNA. The major capsid protein L1 specifically binds to heparan sulfate proteoglycans on the basement membrane to provide initial virion attachment to target cells. Once attached, the virion enters the host cell via clathrin-mediated endocytosis and the genomic DNA is released to the host nucleus. Thus, the location of HPV16 L1 is largely nuclear. Furthermore, stable interactions have been observed between L1 and the minor capsid protein L2, which is necessary for viral genome encapsulation. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papilloma infections, with types 16 and 18 being responsible for about 70 percent of all cases. Currently, B-cell epitopes from type 16-L1 derived peptides are being investigated in order to gain a better understanding of immune responses to this virus (PMID: 22979950).
