Description

Iigp1 (Interferon Inducible GTPase1) was first characterized as one of over 500 genes activated in response to Interferon g. Iigp1 is a 47kDa protein part of the GTPase1 family. Iigp1 demonstrates similar micro-molar nucleotide affinities and oligomerization-dependent hydrolytic activity with human GTPase hGBP1, 67-kDa GTPase (induced by type I and type II interferons) and with the antiviral Mx proteins (interferon type I-induced) (Boehm, 1998, Uthaiah, 2003). Binding affinity for Iigp1 is preferential for GDP rather than GTP. Induction of Iigp1 by poly I:C, a TLR3 ligand and interferon inducer, highlights the involvement of TLR3 signaling pathway. Iigp1 is under transcriptional control of IRF-1, a major pathway and indicator of the involvement of TRIF as the main adaptor molecule for TLR3 and Innate Immune signaling pathways in antiviral responses. Iigp1 functions as a mediator of bacterial resistance especially to intracellular pathogens including bacteria and viruses.
