Description

Desert hedgehog (Dhh) belongs to the highly conserved Hedgehog family of proteins which are involved in multiple developmental processes. Hedgehogs are cleaved autocatalytically, and the N-terminal fragment remains membrane associated due to its cholesterol and palmitate modifications. Dhh binds Patched, Patched 2, and Hedgehog interacting protein (Hip), inhibiting the ability of Patched to repress Smoothened signaling. Dhh is produced by Sertoli cells and is required for testis development, Leydig cell differentiation, and spermatogenesis. It is expressed in the female by ovarian granulosa cells and the corporus luteum and is upregulated in ovarian cancer. Dhh is also expressed by Schwann cells and is upregulated following nerve injury.
