GJB5, also known as Gap junction beta-5 protein, is a 273 amino acid protein that is 31 kDa. A gap junction consists of a cluster of closely packed pairs of transmembrane channels, the connexons, that provide direct intracellular communication. Current research is being performed on this proteins involvement in erythrokeratodermia variabilis, peripheral neuropathy, neuropathy, neuronitis, erythrokeratoderma, and hearing loss. This protein has been linked to signaling in Gap junctions pathway and interacting GSK3B protein.
