Background
Ricin is a protein produced by the castor oil plant, Ricinus Communis. Ricin is a heterodimeric ribosome inhibiting protein. The ribosome inactivating protein called the A chain(RTA) and is linked by a disulphide bond to the B-chain(RTB), which is the binding lectin. Thus the ribosome inactivator is attached to a protein that can transport it into cells, where it is toxic. The total molecular weight is 66 000, with the A chain being 32 KDa and the B chain 34 KDa.
