Background
Polio (acute poliomyelitis, infantile paralysis) is caused by the poliovirus, which can infect the nervous system and cause lasting paralysis. Poliovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Picornavirus family. There are three separate types of poliovirus known as Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.
