Background
Clostridium difficile Toxin B (tcdB or ToxB) is a glucosyltranferase which is known to inactivate Rho, Cdc42 and Rac within target cells. This toxin is encoded on a pathogenicity region of the C. difficile chromossome and is expressed during the log and stationary phases of growth in response to a variety of environmental stimuli. Specific for Toxin B of Clostridium difficile. Does not cross-react with Toxin A.
Clostridium difficile is a gram-positive motile bacterium which is the leading cause of diarrhoea in developed countries. The incidence of disease in humans varies greatly with age, spore density and the administration of antibiotics.
Toxin B (TcdB) is a large exotoxin. Its role in disease is less well understood than that of toxin A, though it seems clear that TcdB contributes to disease. Both toxins modifies the Ras superfamily of small GTPases via glycosylation, inactivating them and leading to the disruption of vital signaling pathways in the cell.
