Background

Bacteroides fragilis is a gram-negative rod shaped bacterium. It is an obligate anaerobe and constitutes a large component (1% to 2%) of the normal colonic bacterial microflora in humans. It is an opportunistic pathogen with the potential to severely limit the success of gastro-intestinal surgery, and is frequently associated with extraintestinal infections such as abscesses and soft tissue infections, as well as diarrheal diseases in animals and humans. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an integral component of the outer membrane (OM) of gram-negative bacteria. The LPS of B.fragilis substantially differs from that of other gram-negative bacteria, since it lacks 2-keto-3-deoxyoctulosonic acid and L-glycero-D-mannoheptose. The lipid A of B.fragilis does not contain 3-hydroxymyristic acid, a major fatty acid in aerobic gram-negative bacteria.
