Nonpsychotic organic brain syndrome is a term that is used to describe a disorder that leads to mental impairment that cannot be characterized as psychosis. Organic brain syndrome is often used as a synonym for dementia, but it can incorporate many more mental disorders. The causes of this disorder are known as physical causes, and include traumatic injuries, cardiovascular disorders, degenerative disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and infections. Symptoms of an organic brain syndrome are similar to those attributed to psychiatric illnesses, and include an impairment of brain functions such as memory and judgment as well as confusion and agitation. Treatment of organic brain syndrome depends on the cause of the disorder, and many patients go through rehabilitation in order to restore lost brain function.
