Muscular Dystrophy, Animal: Disease Bioinformatics

Animal muscular dystrophy encompasses a group of disorders that causes disabling muscle weakness. The affected muscles and severity of the disease vary depending on the cause of the syndrome. Inherited forms of the disease are primarily X-linked and cause a deficiency in the protein dystrophin, which is a necessary component of muscle structure. Animal muscular dystrophy, especially in farm animals, can also be caused by a diet with large amounts of unsaturated fatty acids or cod-liver oil. There is no cure for animal muscular dystrophy, and in many of the farm animal cases, the disorder in not diagnosed until after death.
